What we're looking for

We are looking for poems that reward rereading. Work that is emotionally precise, formally attentive, and rich in image. Poems where form and content are inseparable, and where the line does something the sentence cannot.

Issue One is unthemed. All formal approaches are welcome. What matters is precision of language and feeling.

We are not the right home for:

  • Work that is primarily narrative without linguistic attention
  • Work that is primarily confessional without formal consideration
  • AI-generated work in any form
  • Previously published work, including personal blogs and social media
  • Sexually explicit content
Format

Submit up to 5 poems in a single document, not exceeding 10 pages total. Begin each poem on a new page. Submit as a PDF or Word document.

General policies
  • Simultaneous submissions are welcome. Notify us immediately if your work is accepted elsewhere.
  • Submit only once per reading period. Wait for a response before submitting again.
  • Include a brief cover letter with a third-person biography under 100 words.
  • Response time is within 4 weeks. Please do not query before then.
  • There are no submission fees.
  • We do not publish sexually explicit content or graphic depictions of sexual violence.
Cover art

Issue One is also seeking cover art. We welcome visual work that resonates with the magazine’s aesthetic: restrained, attentive, and contemporary. Submit a single high-resolution image through the form below.
